I started my career in the heart of New York City’s parenting scene, working as a writer and editor for leading parenting magazines. After over a decade of learning the editorial ropes and rising to managing editor, I realized that my true passion wasn’t only writing about parenting—it was also understanding and sharing the intricacies of health. That’s when I shifted gears and became a health columnist.
Over the years, I’ve contributed to a wide variety of respected publications, including:
- Mom.com
- Mommy Poppins
- Midwifery Today
- MSN
- ASPCA Pets
- New York Parenting
- SurvivorNet
- Charlottesville Family
- babyMed
- Brooklyn Paper
- Lifestyles Magazines
- Chesapeake Family Life
- Special Child
- InLove Magazine
- Long Island Woman
- Babble
- Bootcamp for Moms
- Women.com
- Obie
In my health writing, I’ve tackled topics from pregnancy and reproductive health to chronic conditions like thyroid disease, cancer treatments, POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), and more. And while health writing is my expertise, parenting will always be my first love. I regularly share advice on child health, development, education, and the joys and challenges of raising kids.
Health Writing: A Personal Mission
Health writing isn’t just my job—it’s my mission. I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by health and medicine. As the daughter of a high-risk pregnancy nurse/ultrasound specialist and a general surgeon, I grew up with a deep curiosity about the human body and how it works.
My passion for clear, accurate health information deepened after becoming a mom to children with autoimmune conditions that were poorly understood and rarely talked about. This experience motivated me to pursue a career in health writing—one that empowers parents and patients by providing well-researched, accessible information.
My Editorial Journey: From Parenting to Health Writing
I started my editorial career at Big Apple Parent as an editorial assistant under the mentorship of its founder, Helen Freedman, one of my greatest inspirations. From there, I moved on to various local parenting publications, overseeing both print and digital content. Along the way, I’ve had the honor of contributing to countless parenting and health-focused outlets.
Today, I’m Deputy Editor of New York Family, where I continue to blend my love for parenting, health, and personal essays.
Recognizing the Power of Information
In my work, I focus on providing accurate, practical, and empowering health information. Whether I’m writing about pregnancy, chronic conditions, or the daily challenges of parenting, I aim to make complex topics easier to understand and relatable to everyone.
One of my proudest moments as a writer came when my article “POTS: The Teen Disease You’ve Probably Never Heard Of” went viral within 24 hours of publishing. It reinforced my commitment to sharing important health stories that might otherwise be overlooked.
Awards and Recognition
Over the years, my work has been recognized with multiple awards, including:
- Best Column by the Parenting Media Association (PMA) for my “Healthy Living” column
- Silver and Gold Awards for writing and editing from the PMAs, celebrating two decades of excellence in my field
My Specialty: Personal Essays with Heart and Soul
Since childhood, one of my favorite things to write is personal essays, writing about life, love, loss, and everything in between. I write from the heart, sharing my experiences as a mom, a daughter, and just a person trying to make sense of life’s big moments. Whether it’s about finding joy in the everyday or navigating grief, I hope my words resonate with others who’ve felt the same.
Here are a few of my personal essays that have connected with readers:
- Recipe of Love
This one’s all about the little moments that stick with us—like making potato salad with my mom and how I carry that memory with me as I cook for my own kids. It’s about food, family, and the quiet ways we show love to the people we care about. - How Losing My Mom Didn’t Stop Our Connection
In this essay, I dive into what it’s like to lose someone you love deeply—and how, even after they’re gone, their presence can still be felt. It’s a raw, emotional piece about grief, signs from the other side, and the ways I still feel like my mom is with me. - I’ll Never Get Over Losing My Mom and It’s OK
Here, I talk about how, in the year after my mom passed, I honestly had no idea how to keep going. But somehow, over time, I’ve learned that it’s OK to never fully get over something so big—and that love doesn’t disappear, even in death. - The Ninth Inning of Parenting
As my youngest kid hit his teenage years, I had this moment where I realized I’d been a mom for more of my life than I hadn’t been. It’s all about transitioning from being hands-on with my kids to watching them grow into independent young adults—and what that means for me as a mom finding her own path.
Through interacting with my readers, I’ve learned that these essays aren’t just my stories … they’re about what we all go through in life. I write to make sense of things, to process emotions, and to share what I’ve learned. Personal essays remind me that no matter what we’re facing, we’re never really alone.
A Lifelong Animal Lover & Founder of Some Puppy to Love
When I’m not writing about health, parenting, or life’s big moments, you can find me caring for my furry family members. I’ve been an animal lover my whole life, and growing up with cats and dogs—mostly rescues—has shaped so much of who I am today. Our pets are more than just animals … they’re family.
To share my passion for pets and animal advocacy, I started my own dog blog, Some Puppy to Love, which focuses on the joys and challenges of being a pet parent, shares rescue stories, and advocates for animals in need. Whether it’s tips on dog care, spotlighting rescue organizations, or just celebrating the bond between people and their pets, I love sharing stories that inspire others to give animals the love they deserve.
I’m also lucky to have written for some great organizations, like ASPCA Pet Parents, Guild of Shepherds and Collies, andBabble Pets. Being part of the animal welfare community is incredibly fulfilling, and I’m always looking for ways to advocate for animals in need.
If you’re a fellow animal lover, I hope you’ll join me in supporting rescues everywhere!
